Ascea, in the heart of Cilento with crystal-clear waters, Blue Flag beaches, and the ancient ruins of Velia, a perfect blend of history and nature.
Ascea is a town in the Cilento region, south of the mouth of the Alento River. It has a stunning view of the coast and the Velia archaeological area. Velia is an archaeological site of inestimable historical and cultural value. Founded by Greek colonists from Phocaea, it was an autonomous and flourishing city of Magna Graecia.
The town center, Ascea, still retains a late medieval urban and architectural structure. In particular, it is possible to visit some evocative 18th-century palaces, including Palazzo Ricci. The historic building was built in the 18th century in a privileged position that offers a panoramic view of the entire gulf, next to the structure that was probably the Ischia Tower, so named after one of the islands present in the Gulf of Velia in the 6th century BC. The palace represents the most significant architectural building in Ascea and until the mid-19th century it was owned by the De Dominicis family. It was later purchased by the Ricci family. Here is the permanent exhibition "Velia, a city between Being and Well-being". An exhibition that offers visitors the opportunity to relive the ancient city of Elea-Velia, its history, urban planning and its close relationship with the landscape through models and archaeological reconstructions.
In Ascea Marina, on the other hand, there is a magnificent beach that is almost 5 km long, recognizable thanks to the historic presence of the Telegraph Tower, which stands imposingly on the coast. Behind it are Baia d'Argento and Baia della Rondinella, accessible only by sea. From the cliff there is a suggestive path known as the "Sentiero degli Innamorati". This itinerary, about three kilometers long and with an altitude difference of 140 meters, can be covered on foot in just over two hours. While walking along the path, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Gulf of Velia, which extends to Capo Palinuro. The view is simply breathtaking, with the crystal-clear waters that disappear over the horizon and the majestic rocky formations that dot the coast.

Ascea: what to do and what to see
Ascea, located in the heart of the Cilento region in the province of Salerno, is a destination rich in history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes. The charming hilltop villages of Mandia, Catona, and Terradura offer stunning panoramic views of the Gulf of Velia and are perfect for nature lovers, hiking enthusiasts, and cyclists. Along the coast, the seaside resort of Ascea Marina boasts a magnificent 5-kilometer-long beach, a haven of golden sands and crystal-clear waters. This pristine coastline is also an important nesting site for the loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta Caretta), making it a symbol of environmental preservation and biodiversity.
One of the most fascinating historical treasures in the area is the archaeological site of Velia, part of the ancient Greek city of Elea, founded by Parmenides. Together with nearby Paestum, this site represents one of the most significant archaeological areas of southern Italy. Visitors can explore well-preserved remains, including the agora, temples, and the iconic Porta Rosa, the first known example of an arch in Western architecture. To enrich the visitor experience, guided tours and cultural workshops are organized during the summer, allowing travelers to immerse themselves in the extraordinary history of this ancient civilization. Ascea has also been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag by the FEE for the exceptional quality of its waters and sustainable tourism facilities.
Beyond its historical heritage, Ascea is a paradise for nature lovers. The surrounding hills are home to picturesque hiking trails, the most famous being "Il Sentiero degli Innamorati". This scenic 3-kilometer route starts from the cliffs of Ascea Marina and leads to a spectacular viewpoint where visitors can admire the Gulf of Velia stretching all the way to Capo Palinuro. With its unspoiled landscapes and mesmerizing sea views, this trail offers a unique way to experience the beauty of the Cilento coastline.
Ascea is also a town of deep-rooted traditions. Every year, on August 27th, the town comes alive with the Feast of the Madonna di Portosalvo, a highly evocative celebration that unites the local community and visitors. The highlight of the event is a solemn procession, during which the statue of the Madonna is carried through the town's streets before being placed on a boat and taken out to sea. Accompanied by a fleet of festively decorated boats, this moving tradition reflects the town’s profound connection with the sea and its cultural heritage.
