San Mauro Cilento between water mills, noble palaces, and culinary traditions
San Mauro Cilento is a small town located in the Cilento region of Italy. It is situated on the coast, between Castellabate and Agnone, and is known for its beautiful beaches, historic center, and traditional culinary dishes.
The town's name comes from the Sanctus Maurus, a saint venerated in the local Benedictine monastery. It was originally formed by the fusion of two villages, Casal Soprano (upper village) and Casal Sottano (lower village). The oldest religious buildings in the town are located in the middle area, including the 12th-century parish church, the 15th-century chapel of the Holy Spirit, and the 17th-century chapel of the Carmine.
The town's origins are thought to be Greek, as evidenced by some inscriptions found in the Edicola di Santa Sofia. The promontory on which the town is built is dotted with ruins of old water mills, while the historic center is home to elegant noble palaces with imposing stone portals. The former headquarters of the "Pio Monte dei Morti" confraternity now houses the Eleousa Museum, which houses an archive and library of the socio-religious history of ancient Cilento.
One of the town's most popular events is "Settembre ai fichi," a four-day agrofesta that celebrates the fig, a local fruit. The festival features a variety of fig-based dishes, from the "Fico Troiano" to the "Fico Bianco del Cilento".
San Mauro Cilento is also home to the Cooperativa Agricola "Nuovo Cilento," Italy's largest producer of organic olive oil. The town also produces a high volume of D.O.P. (Protected Designation of Origin) olive oil.
