Take a step back in time at Velia, where ancient streets, walls, and gates transport you to a different era. Explore public buildings like the Agora and the Baths to learn more about the city's rich history.

Velia is an archaeological site of extraordinary historical and cultural value located in Marina di Ascea, southern Italy. Founded by Greek colonists in the 6th century BC, Velia was an autonomous and prosperous city of Magna Graecia. During the period of formation of the colonies, it gained importance as a center of commercial exchanges with the Italic populations and the coasts of the Aegean Sea. In the period of formation of the colonies of Magna Graecia, Elea assumed the characteristics of an autonomous and rapidly expanding city, until it reached the level of civilization that would give birth to the philosophers Parmenides and Zeno. It was home to a prestigious medical school whose traditions and knowledge are considered by many to be the roots of the Salernitan School of Medicine. In Roman times, it changed its name to Velia and illustrious figures such as Cicero and Horace found Velia an ideal destination for their vacations. The decline of Velia came with the gradual silting up of the ports and the end of commercial exchanges and the economic wealth that these had meant. With the advent of Christianity, it became a bishopric until the definitive impoverishment of the residential nucleus following the Saracen incursions. In a privileged position on the promontory in Norman times, the still visible tower was built as a bulwark and for the sighting of raiders from the sea.

Today, Velia is a popular tourist destination, and visitors can explore the ruins of the city's temples, baths, agora, and other structures. The site is divided into three main areas: the southern quarter, the northern quarter, and the acropolis. The southern quarter is home to the Foreshore Dam, which was likely a pier used to load and unload ships. The city's southern gate, Porta Marina Sud, is also located in this area. The northern quarter is home to the remains of two insulae (residential blocks) from the Hellenistic period. It is also home to the Imperial Baths, which were built in the 2nd century AD. The acropolis is the highest point of Velia and was home to the city's most important temples and religious structures. The Ionic temple, which was partly destroyed by a Norman castle tower, is located on the acropolis. Velia is a fascinating archaeological site with a rich history. It is a must-see for anyone interested in ancient Greece and Rome.
