Sapri, the pearl of the Gulf of Policastro: history, nature and tourism among rocky headlands and crystalline beaches.

The Cilento Coast, with its fascinating rocky headlands, picturesque bays and enchanting beaches, extends along a long coastal stretch until it reaches Sapri. This splendid location, located in the Gulf of Policastro, is awarded the European Blue Flag and offers a tourist experience of great value. It is best known for the tragic Risorgimento expedition led by Carlo Pisacane and his brave 300 soldiers. A commemorative monument in Largo Pisacane, with the verses of the famous poem "La Spigolatrice" and a bronze sculpture depicting the "Spigolatrice" positioned on the Scialandro rock, testifies to the heroic undertaking. From this point the suggestive cliff of Mount Ceraso begins, one of the unmissable itineraries that leads to the Fortino marina. In the north-eastern part of the village there is the tourist port of Sapri, which for some years has been part of the "Metrò del Mare" line, connecting the various coastal towns of Cilento to the island of Capri. Right from the port a path starts up to the coastal gorge of the Midnight Canal on the border with Basilicata, much appreciated by those who love long walks: "Apprezzami l'asino".

Sapri: what to do and what to see

Sapri is the last tourist resort south of the Cilento territory before moving along the coastal stretch of Maratea and Basilicata. It has boasted the Fee Blue Flag for many years. His name is associated above all with the Gleaner, a historic statue placed on the Scialandro rock which recalls the tragic feat of Carolo Pisacane in 1857. The monument, however, is exhibited in the municipal villa. Of note is the tower of the "Specola di Sapri" from which it is possible to admire the magnificent maritime landscape of the Campania town. The area lends itself to exciting nature trails on foot and by bicycle. In fact, local associations organize excursions along various paths throughout the year. The most popular are: the "Sentiero Apprezzami l'Asino", "The Ring of Monte Ceraso" and "The Ascent to Monte Coccovello".
